Third Trimester
Cooperation Is The Key
28-Apr-2005: Today we went in for the 36-week ultrasound (to check weight and position) and for Jen's first "internal" exam (say it with me: "eeewwwwwwwwww").
We saw that the baby is in the vertex (head down) position, and is getting ready to come meet us. He's about 6.5 pounds right now, which will put him at 8 - 8.5 pounds when he's born (but we'll see ...). Everything looks great - we can't wait to see him in person. From what we could glean, he looks a lot like Dustin, but he's got Jen's high cheek bones. We could see him moving around, and open/close his mouth a lot (a few swallows and a couple yawns). Oh, and we confirmed that he's still a boy, so we'll be washing his clothes this week! ;) They didn't officially change Jen's due date, but based on the ultrasound measurements he's supposed to make his arrival on May 21. Dustin is still betting on the 23rd.
During the "internal" (again, ewwww), the doc announced that Jen is about 1-2 centimeters dilated, and about 80% effaced (effacement has to do with the readiness of the cervix). This doesn't mean much at this point except (hopefully) a pretty smooth delivery, which could still be 3 weeks away!
Jen's blood pressure, which has been spiking near 138/90, is down to a good range (124/74 at last check, in the doc's office). Her swelling is gone, and no sign of protein in her urine. Bad BP, swelling and protein are signs of preeclampsia, a crappy condition that Mindy had that led to her having Brandon a bit early. We can not stress how happy we are about this; Jen sitting on her ass for a week has done a ton of good!
Here's a couple pics from the ultrasound:

These are straight on shots. In the overall pic, his chin is at the left, his forehead to the right. The large white spot kind of in the middle left is his right cheek. The closeup cropped pic to the right has been rotated so that it's more of a portrait (chin down, forehead up).

Random Ketchup Thoughts
18-Apr-2005: It's been a busy and hectic time for us. Jen has been winding down at work and trying to bring some order to the chaos at home. Dustin has been painting both bedrooms and working on other house-related things. Both of us have been running off to Lowe's for paint and supplies. Jen even made an emergency run to Home Depot for a new paint roller by herself at 10p the other night after Dustin snapped the plastic one in two (when painting a ceiling you put pressure on a weak part of the handle).
Which brings us to the hell of painting a ceiling. Dustin's dad managed to use some voodoo on him and convinced him to paint the acoustic ceilings in both bedrooms. Dustin really didn't want to do it but it did need to be done, especially in the baby's room. The job was awful. Dustin recommends that if you ever need to do it, hire some friggin' day workers.
Today, Dustin finished painting the master bedroom and Jerry and him moved all the furniture back. Tomorrow Dustin will begin the final phase of painting the baby's room. To be completed this week:
- Second coat of blue on the two walls.
- Prep and paint the closet walls.
- Sponge paint the blue squares on the bottom 3' of the white walls.
- Paint and install the chair rail on the white walls.
- Any touch ups necessary.
Dustin will complete the stenciling probably next week.
The ceiling fan has been installed (it's so awesome; we'll get a pic up soon). The cellular blinds arrived Friday and will be installed this week. The carpet was installed in both bedrooms on the 8th. We are having a company come out Monday to give us an estimate to install air conditioning. Our new master bed arrives Wednesday.
Oh, if you haven't figured it out by now, we just completed a refi. In addition to paying off all of our (quite substantial) credit card debt (YIPPEE!), we also were able to get some cash out to make some upgrades around here.
Chillin'
13-Apr-2005: We're in the middle of week 34 now. Jen has been instructed by her doctor to rest for 30 minutes every night when she gets home from work. Dustin took this shot while she was doing her chillin'.
Jen has less than two weeks left of work. Her last day is April 22, and her tentative return date is November 1.
Dustin took the above shot with his new camera, a Canon 20D 8.2 MP Digital SLR he bought for taking good shots of the baby and other things. Jen has a smaller 5 MP camera coming for throwing into the diaper bag.
Cousins
03-Apr-2005: A couple shots of Jen with Brandon by her belly. Dustin loves the second pic...
Baby's "First" Ballgame
31-Mar-2005: As many of you know, we are die-hard Oakland A's fans, so as soon as they were in town the first time, we were there. They played an exhibition game tonight across the Bay versus the icky Giants (less icky with no Bonds). They ended up losing by a run in the 10th, bringing the total times the Giants have ever beaten the A's to three (okay, maybe four).
Anyway, Dustin took a shot of Jen all decked out in A's gear. This is technically our baby's first ballgame. We have tickets to a few more games before Jen is due, and our first tickets after the due date are for July 3, when he should be about 6 weeks old.
A Brand New (Mini) Cooper!
27-Mar-2005: Our friend Deirdre went into labor at 8:30 this morning (she was due tomorrow) and had a little baby boy this evening at 8:45. We went to the hospital around 3 and stayed until 10:15, long enough to hold him. Here are his vitals and some pics:

P.S. Dustin promises to post more updates to this site. He's been really busy the last couple of weeks and behind on postings.
Brandon and Dustin Dance to the Blues
25-Mar-2005: Dustin was playing his music collection on random through iTunes while holding Brandon. Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Flood Down in Texas" came on and Dustin proceeded to slowdance with the little guy. Here is the resultant picture:
Huh?
24-Mar-2005: We had another doc appointment today and we're guessing that the full moon was screwing with everyone. Jen had wore her "Bundle of Boy" shirt into the office and midway through the initial setup, the nurse did a double-take and said, "You're having a boy?" Apparently they had written "girl" into the chart. So she crossed it out and wrote "boy." Dustin joked that we better prepare some extra name choices just in case.
Then Dr. Imig came in. Jen asked her a couple of questions and the doc answered them with "Well, with your second child..." We both went "huh?" She realized her mistake after we pointed it out.
Working in the Boy's Room
28-Feb-2005: Today is the start of Week 28 and the Official Start of the Third Trimester. Yikes, 12 weeks to go.
Dustin has updated the design for the baby room's walls, now with soccer balls:
The design is definitely going on one wall, the wall that faces you as you walk in to the room. We're hoping the work goes decently fast, so Dustin can do all the walls.
Dustin spent the weekend getting the walls "up to snuff." After stripping the wallpaper two weekends ago and during this past week, he consulted with both Dads on next steps, Dad Waibel for his construction expertise and Dad Makin for construction and "refi-ability" advice. Dustin then patched the gouges in the wall and retextured both the wall and the 1' stripe on the other walls where a wallpaper border was. We also patched various other holes in walls around the house.
Dustin spent this morning sanding the texturing down and patching some other wall bangs. Next steps are to wash the three walls that haven't been retextured then primer them all.
